How Waterproofing Really Works

The fabric of a turnout rug isn’t what keeps the rain out. Instead, it’s a thin waterproof membrane bonded to the inside of the outer fabric. This clever layer blocks water droplets while still allowing vapour (from sweat) to escape.

Once that membrane is damaged, it can’t be repaired—so the quality of this layer is what separates a reliable rug from a cheap one. Low-quality membranes may peel, lose breathability, or start leaking after just one season.

Breathability Explained

Breathable rugs allow sweat vapour to pass through thousands of microscopic pores in the fabric. On a sunny day, you can sometimes see these pores by holding the rug up to the light.

But here’s the catch: once the outer fabric is wet, breathability is reduced to almost nothing. That’s why condensation can build up inside a rug, making it look like water is seeping in when it’s actually your horse’s perspiration.

Tip: A thin cotton under rug can help wick sweat away from the coat and reduce clamminess in humid or wet conditions.

What Is Wicking?

Wicking is the capillary action that causes moisture to travel through fabrics. In horse rugs, this often happens when linings or under rugs soak up water along seams, bindings, or drip lines.

For example, if an under rug peeks out beneath a turnout, it can act like a sponge, drawing rainwater upward. Long, steady showers are more likely to cause wicking than quick downpours.

Common Leak Look-Alikes

If your horse feels damp under a rug, it doesn’t always mean the rug is leaking. Causes include:

• Condensation – moisture forming when warm air meets cold fabric.

• Sweating – especially if your horse is active or rugged too warmly.

• Wicking – moisture travelling up linings or under rugs.

• Tail flap seams – stitching around the tail is a normal weak point in any design.

Checking Waterproofing at Home

To test waterproofing, place a dry section of rug over a sink or tub, create a shallow dip, and pour in water. If the fabric holds without seepage, the membrane is still intact.

Extending the Life of Your Rug

• Wash gently, in cold or warm water with mild detergent.

• Skip the top-loading washing machine—it twists and damages membranes.

• Don’t store rugs in direct sun. UV weakens fabrics over time.

• Be mindful of shampoos and coat sprays that can harm waterproof linings.
