Horse Rug Size Guide | Love My Horse Australia

❤️ Find the Perfect Love My Horse Rug Fit

At Love My Horse, we believe a well-fitted horse rug is essential to

keeping your horse comfortable, protected, and free to move.

The right size prevents rubbing, slipping, or pressure points, ensuring a secure,

safe fit for happy, healthy horses in all Australian conditions.

❤️ How To Measure Your Horse

  • Start at the center of the chest where the top chest buckle would sit. A
  • Run the tape around the shoulder and along the belly.
  • Finish at the rump, roughly where you want the rug to end B

❤️ How to Measure Your Horse Rug for the Perfect Fit

To check your horse rug fit, fasten the top chest buckle on the tightest hole — this shows the maximum chest overlap.
If you need the last (longest) holes, the rug is too small — go up a size for comfort and coverage.

A larger chest overlap means fewer drafts and a better fit.
To measure your rug, lay it flat with the buckles done up and measure from the front edge (between the chest straps) straight along the side to the rear edge.

This gives the correct horse rug size for your horse’s shape and build.

❤️ Checking Your Horse Rug Fit

  • Fasten the top chest buckle on the tightest hole, this will give you the maximum chest overlap; if you need to use the longest holes, the rug is too small and change up to the next size.
  • The rug should rest just in front of the withers without pulling or shifting.
  • Leave enough slack in the sursingles for a hand’s width. Too loose can lead to becoming undone or catching on something; too tight can cause discomfort.
  • Tail Flap: Ideally sits after the top of the tail. If it in front of the tail, size up.

❤️ Love My Horse Rug Sizing

All Love My Horse rugs are based on the same trusted cut and consistent sizing, giving you the confidence to shop across any style in our range.

Our designs have been refined over 10+ years to improve fit across all shapes – from high-withered thoroughbreds to broad-chested Clydesdales.

With a generous chest overlap and large chest adjustment, our rugs can often fit one full size up, making them ideal for growing horses.

We offer three tailored fit types to ensure the right shape for every body:

❤️ Turnout Horse Rugs

  • Allow an approx 4cm extra in length measuring for a Turnout Rugs. This allows for a bigger chest overlap and accommodates layering without under rugs escaping their coverage.
  • It is popular to go one size bigger for your winter styles.
  • This additional length boosts waterproofing and warmth in wet or cold conditions.
  • No Neck Join Design - Our waterproof combos feature a continuous cut, removing that restrictive seam at the neck. This no neck join design encourages better movement, reduces pressure points, and keeps out rain and drafts.
  • Love My Horse does not offer a Detachable Neck options as I believe these designs are not 100% waterproof.

❤️ Horse Rug Fabric Notes:

  • Summer mesh and cotton horse rugs may feel slightly roomier due to the natural stretch in these fabrics.

  • Winter-fill rugs are more snug as the fill reduces internal space, so consider sizing up if your horse is on the cusp.

❤️ Common Pitfalls & Reminder

  • Necklines vary significantly across brands; a deep-cut neck can make the rug seem bigger.
  • Allow for layers in colder seasons, winter rugs have padding that takes up extra space.
  • Young or narrow-chested horses might need a smaller size than the measurement until they fill out. See the high wither wug design
  • These fit the younger immature shaped horses including Arabs very well with a smaller neck line.

❤️ Miniature Horse Rug Sizes 3’6 – 4’9

Our smallest horse rugs fit Miniatures, Shetlands, and other tiny equines.

These rugs feature:

  • A shorter side drop to avoid bulk
  • A narrower chest and neckline to suit fine builds
  • Larger chest adjustment for the chunky monkeys

❤️ Standard Horse Rug Sizes 5’0 – 6'9

  • Our standard fit with a generous drop and wide chest overlap.
  • Designed to suit most light and medium breeds, including Arabs Thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses, and typical riding horses.
  • Fit features: Larger chest adjustment allowing rugs to extend almost one full size bigger.

❤️ Clydesdale Horse Rug Sizes 6’6 – 7’6 XL Chest

Made specifically for heavy horses like Clydesdales, Shires, warmbloods and other heavy horse breeds.

These rugs feature:

  • A longer drop - No mini skirts
  • A wider deeper chest for big builds
  • Extended neck drop to cover massive necks

❤️ Converting New Zealand Horse Rug Sizes to Australian

New Zealand horse rugs are measured from C to D (chest to dock), while Australian horse rug sizing is measured along the side of the rug, A to B (chest to back leg)
To convert from New Zealand sizing to Australian sizing, simply add 1’3” (one foot three inches) to the NZ size.

Example:
A 5’0” New Zealand rug equals a 6’3” Australian horse rug size.
